The Satisfaction of Black Mariah/Time2
by Howard Chaykin
Rare 1987 First Print
This is prime Chaykin, at the peak of his bold graphic style. Despite the near-future setting of the story, Chaykin still favors a 1940-ish look for both men and women. Although it looks a little dated, there's a lot to like in those fashions: women's clothes that emphasis the hourglass figure, and equally distinctive styles for men. Chaykin's strong, iconic poses just bring out the best in that look.
And Chaykin's stories bring out the worst of everything else. It's a modern story at the tipping point in a rights movement - this time, rights for people who've traded their failing flesh for robotic existence. Of course, the fact of the rights movement implies the need for it, this time with an anti-robotic backlash.
